"A Man After God's Own Heart"

A Short Story in the Life of Johnny Pope

Many teen boys discover at around 16 or 17 years old that they can frustrate and alienate their parents. Being pretty sure that spankings had stopped, Johnny chose wearing down his dad with an attitude, generally being a disappointment to his dad's expectations and using wits to accomplish his own independence.

It was the summer of 1967 that Johnny was sent to his uncle's bakery to work and live with Uncle Red (a retired Navy chef and general disciplinarian). Many interesting conflicts occurred during this period of Johnny's life. One time, Uncle Red asked Johnny to preach in Newport, Arkansas. Johnny said yes but made a very embarrassing mess of trying to hand out information, finally just leaving the pulpit and sitting down.

Back at the house Johnny said, “I sure made a mess out of that, didn't I?” Uncle Red said, “You sure did. You were using your dad's outline, weren't you?” In surprise, Johnny said, “Yes, how did you know?” Uncle Red said, “Johnny, you have got to get your own message from God. You are not your dad and you can't be your dad. The only way you can get a message from God is to go to God and ask Him for a message.”

The statement in this DVD that should become a Johnny Pope quote is “God wants you to just be you and then come to him. Just being yourself”.

This message by Dr. Johnny Pope is a classic on the most important fundamentals of what a person that is after God's own heart looks like. It is our prayer that each pastor will earnestly seek an ever-present God for their message and preach God's message rather than a message from man's intellect.

A message from the mind will impress the mind but a message from the heart will impress hearts.
